Lent, Holy Week, & Easter at BHPC
Lent, Holy Week, & Easter at BHPC
Lent is the forty-day liturgical period of prayer and preparation when we become ready to accept the gift of resurrection and new life that Easter offers us. Traditionally a time of prayer and fasting, we at Bradley Hills we also support taking time from overly-busy schedules for new or regular spiritual disciplines. During Lent, we offer:
Ash Wednesday Services
Our services will be held on Wednesday, March 1 at 1:00 and 7:30 pm. These meaningful services marked the beginning of the holy season of Lent. There was Communion and Imposition of Ashes at both services.
Lenten Sermon Series - 'Taking Lent Seriously':
As we begin our journey towards Easter, we challenge ourselves to take the season of Lent seriously. Join us for a Sermon Series on the Promise of Lent:
Lenten Centering Prayer
Every weekday in Lent (March 1 to April 13), join Pastor David Gray in the Sanctuary from 12:00 to 12:20 pm for a Centering Prayer to reflect upon this journey towards the cross.
Lenten Day of Service & Spring Fling:
After worship on Sunday, March 26, make a big impact on the lives of those who have survived disasters. We'll assemble hygiene kits, cleanup buckets and school kits in Memorial Hall for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance which immediately distributes response kits to areas of need following disasters. After assembling the kits, we'll spend some time making a difference in and around our sacred space by helping beautify the church, working on the grounds doing basic spring cleanup and various tasks.
Lenten Small Groups
We invite you to deepen your spiritual practice this Lent by joining a six-week small group. As we journey through Lent together, we encourage you to make some space for your spiritual journey and growth as you strengthen your relationship with God and friendships within the congregation. The small groups will be a time for self-reflection and spiritual growth through weekly themes of service, growth, sharing our stories and welcoming. These are connectional, discussion-based group using scripture, activities, and prayer guided by a leader. You are invited to join a group during the sign-up period from February 19 to February 27. You will be matched with a group of 6 - 12 Bradley Hills members depending on your availability, and meet weekly during Lent.
We offer services on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday during Holy Week 2016:
Palm Sunday (April 9, 2017)
Worship with us at 8:30 & 10:30 am to experience the Children's Palm Processional, special music, and David preaching.
Maundy Thursday (April 13, 2017)
Worship with us at 7:30 pm. This reverent service is profoundly moving and meaningful as the darkness deepens during Holy Week.
Good Friday (April 14, 2017)
We hold two worship services on Good Friday at 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm. The service at 3:00 pm will be a traditional Tenebrae service.
At 7:30 pm, the Bradley Hills Chancel Choir, nationally-renowned soloists, and the Orchestra of the Hills will perform Passio by 21st century Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Dubbed a ‘modern mystic,’ Pärt developed his unique musical style under the oppression of Soviet rule, and has since become the most performed living composer in the world. The style that he developed, ‘tintinnabulation,’ is a synthesis of elements of Orthodox Christian music, Gregorian Chant and Renaissance Polyphony, and has been described as haunting, innovative and transcendent. In Passio, Pärt tells the Passion of Christ through St. John’s narrative.
We offer two identical, family-friendly services at 9:30 and 11:15 am, with special prelude music starting at 9:15 and 11:00. Pastor David Gray will preach.
Between services, we will offer Children's Easter Crafts and our Easter Egg Hunt will be held at 10:45 am.
